I worked in Madagascar for 6 works, focusing on wildlife conservation. My program has a field station in Southern Madagascar, one of the areas known for being at the forefront of the climate change crisis. Madagascar is also one of the poorest countries, and in Southern Madagascar, this region is arguably the most lacking in resources. I saw only one other aid group (and the only humanitarian group) in the weeks I was there and it was USAID. They were installing wells in a rural area outside of Toliara. This is a region where people have zero access to clean water (or any water). I saw kids walking for miles barefoot on a dirt road with plastic yellow cans to get water. Thank you USAID, those of us who have seen first hand the struggles in other countries, know you are great and should make Americans proud.

When my mother-in-law passed away in Kathmandu on New Year’s Day, we called the Embassy help number. Within minutes, the Consular Chief called us and provided the help and guidance we so desperately needed. We are eternally grateful! American citizens are fortunate to have such support while overseas.

When I first moved to a new city for my first job out of undergrad, I was scared and didn’t know what to expect from post-grad life. An employee from USAID, who was also an alumna from my university, went above and beyond to make me feel welcome in my new community. She met with me to talk about career advice, how to find housing, and ways to keep a strong social network going in the real world. Like every other international development professional I’ve met, her kindness extended beyond her professional career to touch the lives of everyone in her personal circles better too! I’m very grateful for her kindness during a time of transition in my life.

Our daughter was doing her junior year abroad and had her phone stolen out of her hand. I encouraged her to call the embassy emergency line. And, as you say, someone answered. They offered help and excellent advice. They were there when she needed help, and we are so grateful.

Starting grad school was overwhelming, but the climate scientists at NASA made my transition so much smoother. Their guidance, personal support, and willingness to share insights about research and career paths gave me confidence. Their encouragement helped me navigate challenges and feel prepared for the journey ahead. I’m grateful for their generosity and dedication—not just to science, but to those following in their footsteps.

I never realized how important Park Rangers are until I visited a National Park for the first time. Their patience, kindness, and passion for conservation was contagious. Thank you for everything that you do!
